Toronto FC fall 7 spots to No. 22 in MLS weekly power rankings

The L’s keep on coming for Toronto FC.

Sure, power rankings are subjective and they don’t actually carry any weight. But, as TFC’s spiral has fans fearing that 2023 may repeat itself this year, it’s hard to watch the Reds sink down the Major League Soccer power rankings.

The latest list sees Toronto FC fall seven spots to No.22, six spots worse off than CF Montréal and 15 back of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who fell three spots after losing at home to the LA Galaxy this past weekend.

Make it three straight losses and 10 goals allowed in three games since losing Lorenzo Insigne to a hamstring injury. The Reds have fallen back to Earth at speed.

They certainly have fallen back down to Earth, at a rapid pace.

“The story last week was we were too eager and didn’t manage those chaos moments trying to get a goal back and just being more patient,” compared Herdman after Saturday’s late 3-2 loss in Charlotte.

“I said at half-time, ‘1-0 down in Charlotte, you’re in the game. Tactically, we feel good. You’re right where you need to be. You can come back.’

“And I genuinely believed that we would get good opportunities in this game and take them,” he added. “Tonight felt different, the comeback was there.”

Lorenzo Insigne’s absence has been crushing, but he certainly isn’t the only player on the shelf. The injury crisis at Toronto FC has made it very difficult to measure the team’s overall performances this season. While the team has been poor in the last three losses, it’s impossible to know how good or how bad this Toronto FC side actually is right now.

The Reds will hope to get back to winning ways on Saturday when they return home to host the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. ET.
