Teen boy dies after shooting near Douglass Community Center | News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A 16-year-old boy died and another teen boy, 17, was injured after gunfire near the Douglass Community Center Tuesday afternoon, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD). 

MPD said the shooting happened behind 1616 Ash Street, the address of the community center, around 3:50 p.m. 

Both boys were rushed to Regional One Health when first responders arrived.

The 16-year-old, found lying outside the center in critical condition, later died at the hospital; the other teen remains in non-critical condition, according to MPD. 

Police report that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the two teenagers. No charges have been filed, police say, but the incident remains under investigation.

Memphis Shelby County Schools released a statement regarding the shooting at the community center:

The Memphis-Shelby County Schools Board of Education mourns the loss of the teenager who was involved in a shooting in the Douglass community this afternoon.

We will closely monitor the Memphis Police Department’s investigation and assist if and when needed. The Board offers condolences to the family of the victim.
