Siouxland Chamber of Commerce visits Washington DC

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Sioux City leaders were in Washington D.C. Wednesday to lobby lawmakers for measures that would benefit Siouxland.

The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce met with Iowa Senator Joni Ernst as part of their 69th annual conference. A major focus of this year’s trip is upgrades to Sioux City’s wastewater treatment plant, as well as the 185th Air Refueling Wing.

The 185th needs upgrades to its runway after they switched to a heavier aircraft. Officials said those upgrades would be made, but that was 20 years ago, and the insufficient runway is impacting the 185th.

“They have to take off not fully fueled because it’s too heavy,” Barbara Sloniker with the chamber said. “So they have to take off, with lighter fuel, then go fill up before they can go on their mission, and they’re refueling all over the world.”

The chamber will continue their conference in D.C. Thursday, where they will meet with Senator Chuck Grassley, and the director of the American immigration office.
