Sibyl passed away peacefully at the
Prince Edward Home in Charlottetown, PEI, April 15th, 2024, in her
90th year. Predeceased by her devoted husband of 62 years, Jack
Cutcliffe, and cherished son Christopher. Also predeceased by brothers
Ronald, John, and Frederick Hosking, and sister Joan Eddy. Survived by

Sibyl was born in Bathurst, NB, as
the fourth child of William and Mary Jane Hosking (nee Jamieson).
After losing her mother at age seven, her father remarried (Mary
Bond), and two more brothers were born. Sibyl attended elementary and
high school in Bathurst, and received her teaching certification at
MacDonald College, McGill University, where she met her life partner
and fellow-Maritimer, Jack. The two were married in 1954 and lived in
Ontario (Harrow and Picton) before moving to Charlottetown in 1962
with their first three boys.
Sibyl was known for her positive
outlook and fun-loving nature, and was blessed with the ability to
take on life’s many challenges and opportunities. She had a
deep commitment to family, with an unwavering devotion to youngest son
Christopher (who had cerebral palsy). Sibyl also dedicated over four
decades to volunteering, fundraising, and public
service, notably on behalf of the Queen
Elizabeth Hospital, Spring Park United Church, the Gold Cup Parade
Committee, and Charlottetown City Council, to name but a few
organizations. In 2012, Sibyl received the Order of PEI –
the highest honour that can be awarded to a citizen of the Province
– in recognition of her individual excellence and
outstanding leadership in the community.
Sibyl’s clarity of
purpose, enthusiasm, and formidable energy were admired by many as an
unparalleled “force of nature”. She was a skilled
badminton and bridge player, and an avid cyclist and investor. Sibyl
also enjoyed treasured friends in numerous social circles. The family
wishes to acknowledge and thank Barbara Stewart, a lifelong
devoted friend, who later – during Sibyl’s years with
Alzheimer’s – was an extraordinary caregiver. The family is
also grateful for the caring staff at Geneva Villa, Whisperwood Villa
and the Prince Edward Home. Sibyl will be fondly remembered for her
courage and generosity of spirit, and will continue to inspire many
whose lives she touched.
