Papiss Cisse’s exciting observation as he thinks Newcastle have found a ‘proper striker’

Papiss Cisse has backed Alexander Isak to become a ‘big striker’ at Newcastle United because the club’s top scorer has ‘everything’.

Isak has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season and has the best minutes per goal ratio of those who have played a minimum of 500 minutes in the Premier League. Remarkably, only Cole Palmer, Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins have plundered more goals than Isak in the top-flight in 2023-24 despite the Sweden international missing eight league games through injury.

That form has not gone unnoticed, of course, and Arsenal are among those sides who have been linked with a move for Isak. However, Isak has said that he ‘absolutely loves playing’ for Newcastle and ‘wants to be here in the future,’ and Eddie Howe stressed the Magpies have to keep the 24-year-old because ‘elite’ players are ‘so difficult to find’.

Cisse will certainly agree with that assertion. A few months before Isak’s arrival, in 2022, Cisse told ChronicleLive that he wanted to see ‘somebody do better than what we did and scoring crazy goals like I did’. The 38-year-old has got his wish.

“He’s a proper striker,” he said. “He’s good with the ball and he moves very well. He can be a big striker and I hope the club try to keep him. He’s finding space in the club and on the pitch. He looks happy there.

“If a striker is doing this on the pitch and they’re scoring, this guy is happy where he is now. I would say to him to continue what you are doing. He can become a big striker because he has everything.”
