Las Vegas Aces’ head coach and South Dakota native Becky Hammon speaks in Sioux Falls

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Las Vegas Aces’ head coach and South Dakota native Becky Hammon is going to be this year’s guest speaker at Experience Sioux Falls’ annual visitor industry luncheon.

Her appearance is perfect timing as women’s basketball seems to be reaching a whole new level this year.

Becky Hammon has a long list of accolades and accomplishments in basketball; too many to mention.

But the WNBA Hall of Famer is going to be sharing her personal stories at next month’s Experience Sioux Falls annual convention.

“We’ve never had anyone like this come in, but I can tell you I got calls saying is it true, are you really bringing her in,” Experience Sioux Falls executive director Teri Schmidt said.

Experience Sioux Falls executive director Teri Schmidt says women’s basketball is at an all-time high right now and Hammon will probably talk about that.

“We couldn’t have timed it any better, we couldn’t have made it happen if we would have tried, it’s happening and there’s a lot of excitement,” Schmidt said.

One of those who is super excited is Brooke Nicholson Grote of Sioux Falls.

“I used to love watching her play and had the opportunity to guard her a couple of times back in high school in the 90s,” Nicholson Grote said.

She says Hammon was really hard to guard.

“She had this way this big swoop that she’d do right in front of you, you didn’t quite know if she was going to go around you or if she was going to pull up and shoot, but you knew she could do it all,” Nicholson Grote said.

And she has done it all, including coaching in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs, where one game she had to take over as head coach.

“She’s going to talk about leadership and teamwork and I’m sure she’ll talk a little bit about how she got to where she was,” Schmidt said.

Tickets are on sale now for the May 6th event, contact Experience Sioux Falls for more information.
