Royals Treatment

The Kansas City Royals rolled into Chicago on Monday night with a record of 10-6 after losing two of three games against the Mets in New York this weekend. The series loss to the Mets also dropped the Royals to just 2-4 on the road this season. In the series opener against the White Sox, Royals starter Seth Lugo continued his stellar start to the season pitching seven shutout innings ands striking out four in a 2-0 Royals’ win. Vinnie Pasquantino homered and doubled in the win.

The Royals will send hard-throwing righty Brady Singer to the hill in game two against the White Sox. Singer is off to a hot start this season after struggling through much of 2023. He is 2-0 on the season in three starts with an ERA of just 0.98. He has allowed 10 hits in 18.1 innings pitched. After struggling to put hitters away last season, Singer already has 18 strikeouts this season with just four walks and a 0.76 WHIP. Last season, Singer made 24 starts and allowed a whopping 182 hits in just 159.2 innings pitched. He struck out just 133 batters last season and walked 49 batters with a WHIP of 1.45. He finished just 8-11 with an ERA of 5.52.

Key Injuries: C/1B Salvador Perez is day-to-day. 2B Michael Massey, RP Austin Cox, RP Carlos Hernandez, and RP Jake Brentz are out.

Slumping Sox

The Chicago White Sox are off to an abysmal start in 2024 with a record of just 2-13 heading into the series opener with the Royals. That record includes a 1-7 mark at home this season. The White Sox have committed to a rebuilding season this year and things have gotten even worse with injuries to several key players. This homestand is off to a rough start after being swept over the weekend by the Cincinnati Reds by a combined score of 27-5. On Monday night against the Royals, the White Sox offense came up empty once again. The ChiSox had just four hits and failed to score in a 2-0 series-opening loss to the Royals. White Sox starter Nick Nastrini allowed three hits and two runs in five innings of work.

The White Sox will send righty Erick Fedde to the hill in game two of the series. Fedde has not had a decision in three starts this season, his first season with the White Sox and first since 2022 after missing all of last season with an injury. Fedde has allowed 15 hits in 14.2 innings pitched this season with an ERA of 4.30. Fedde has struck out 14 and walked six batters while coughing up five home runs in his three starts. In his last full season in the bigs, 2022, Fedde went 6-13 with an ERA of 5.81. He allowed 149 hits in just 127 innings of work with a WHIP of 1.63.

Key Injuries: DH Eloy Jimenez, C Max Stassi, RP Corey Knebel, RP John Brebbia, and SS Ryan Burrowes are out.

The Royals are off to a great start this season and part of that success is due to the return to form of starting pitcher Singer. Singer has found his strikeout pitch again after struggling in 2023 with just 133 strikeouts. He is well ahead of that pace this year and looks like a top-two starter in the rotation. The Royals are hitting home runs at a fast pace already with 20 on the season and that doesn’t bode well for White Sox starter Fedde. Fedde has already given up five home runs in just three starts this season. The White Sox, as a team, are hitting just .200 as team this season and have struck out 132 times as a team. I like the Royals to roll to a comfortable win on Tuesday night.

Take the Royals with the run line.

Prediction: Royals -1.5

The Royals will do their part in this game against Fedde who has coughed up five home runs already this season and had a WHIP of 1.63 in his last full year of work. Singer, however, has been tough on the opposition this year and faces a White Sox lineup that is far from formidable, particularly without Jimenez available. I like the Royals to do most of the damage in this one but the White Sox will not produce enough to push this game past the run total.

Take the under.

Prediction: Under 8.5
