Cincinnati Reds vs Seattle Mariners – April 16, 2024

The Cincinnati Reds will be looking to bounce back tonight after a tough game for the club on Monday night against the Seattle Mariners. Tonight’s first pitch is set for 9:40pm ET.

Starting Lineup

Jeimer Candelario was originally in the lineup and starting at third base, but he was scratched with an illness.

Starting Pitchers

Hunter Greene

Tonight will be the first road start of the season for Greene after pitching his first three games at Great American Ball Park. He’ll be looking to rebound from his last outing where he allowed six earned runs in 6.0 innings against the Brewers – including giving up two homers.

This season, Greene has dominated right-handed hitters, but lefties have been able to find some success. Left-handed hitters are striking out a ton against him, but they’ve got both home runs that Greene has allowed and are hitting for a higher average (small sample size alert applies here). For his career, Greene’s been much better against lefties.

Logan Gilbert

A modern-day workhorse, Logan Gilbert has topped 185.0 innings in back-to-back seasons while making 32 starts in each year. Things have gone well for him once again to start this season.

This season there aren’t any real splits for Gilbert as he’s been quite good against both lefties and righties, though he has been homer-prone to this point. In his career, though, he’s been better against left-handed hitters as he’s held them to a .632 OPS – 104 points lower than the OPS right-handed hitters have against him.

Continued struggles against Seattle

Cincinnati is just 5-17 all time against the Seattle Mariners. The two clubs haven’t met that frequently, but when they have things have not gone the Reds way. In fact, until last year’s 2-1 series win, Cincinnati had lost all six series against Seattle.
